Oh yes I love my tomatoes. I have eaten them green, red, yellow and orange. All over the US and Europe. The Italians are especially fond of them. Not only for pasta but also for stews and soups. Fried, boiled, grilled or baked. They also make great salads. I am hooked on tomatoes.

Good questions. This particular type of Styrofoam does not emit toxins. If it is used right it should last for many years. The Styrofoam could be broken down and used in a paper create mixture and made into bricks or stepping stones. I will soon write and article on paper create.

Both use fish water in a recirculating system and mean pretty much the same thing I tend to use the term Aquaponics in a border sense. Bioponics - a term coined by some. Bio (from the Greek bios - life, mode of life) combined with hydroponics techniques, but replacing the mineral nutrient salts with natural input of nutrients from a biological source - fish effluent. At AESL it is a simple and innovative system of food production combining aquaculture and hydroponic growing techniques without expensive equipment.

Essentially, aquaponics is organic gardening, but without the dirt. Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (soilless plant culture). In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water that results from raising fish provides a source of natural fertilizer for the growing plants. As the plants consume the nutrients, they help to purify the water that the fish live in. A natural microbial process keeps both the fish and plants healthy and helps sustain an environment in which they both can thrive.

Nature Wonder,

I've been researching for over three years and have collected materials as I go. Plus working daily with the farm in one way or another has brought a tremendous amount of experience. We test things continuously. Thanks for your great comments!

I began to look into what is really in the foods I was eating, and I was SHOCKED. One of the things that really suprised me was "enriched grains" and "enriched flours." To make an enriched grain, they have to take the time to take out all the beneficial stuff from the grain, and then replace it with synthetic things and then they use it or make it into flour.... why waste all that extra time when a grain in its natural form is so much healthier?? I only buy breads with 100% whole grain and no artificial sweeteners in it (such as high fructose corn syrup). Look for sweeteners like sugar or molasses.

I did some research myself on the health-boosting effects of honey on the body, and an interesting fact I found is that honey contains oligosaccharides, which promote the growth of beeficial bifidobacteria in the colon. This is especially beneficial following a bout with diharrhea or a round of antibiotics.

You said: "It is a common misconception that organic foods cost more than non-organic foods; however, the reality is that purchasing non-organic foods from farmers will cost consumers triple the amount due to the taxation from the grocery stores, and the money collected to maintain and repair the environment that is being harmed by the pollution from non-organic farming practices."

That is very interesting; I've never heard that before. I suppose it makes alot of sense though.

Also, to quote:

It sounds like a great idea... one question though: is the styrofoam used to make the growing chambers environmentally safe? In the end, won't that be thrown away (eventually) and cause more harm to the environment? Wouldn't soil growing technically be a more natural way of growing plants and vegetables?

"New propagation techniques are now available which give the commercial grower the ability to breed most species of fry at any time of the year to meet projected demands. Breeding in-house also helps assure bio-security since the disease and parasite status of the fish is known from day one, greatly lowering the chance of a loss of the crop."

This is a very good thing.

Chris,

It's all about thinking out the box and a little research also. I remember going to my grandpas house and going into the front yard and eating nice juicy peaces when they were in season. My grandmother had fruit trees at the old farm I used to eat her apples as a young boy. It was just the way people did things back then. You could walk around the house and find enough food to eat.
