Our Systems

The Tilapia Project Team

Aquaponics and Earth Sustainable Living has an incredible team of people. Some are plumbers, carpenters, and inventors, and some are good with electronics and computers.

We have invented and improved upon a handful of systems that catch a lot of attention, even from aquaculture consultants. You can buy most of the parts for our systems at your local hardware store.

Our systems (Water Systems, Soilless Systems, Soil Systems) are very simple! Let me tell you a story about them:

Recently we were visiting FriendShips, a great humanitarian organization that feeds thousands of people during times of disaster such as Hurricane Katrina. They travel by ship carrying tons of food and distribute the food along with clothes and survival kits to hurricane and disaster victims.

When I first arrived at their headquarters I had to drive through about two acres of so-called “junk” (or gifts in kind) that has been donated to the non-profit for use in their travels. By the time we got to the office, after winding around through roads lined with this material, I had spotted enough items to build one of our Aquaponics and Earth farms in style!

One thing that you will learn by reading this site is that we utilize not only our own systems, but the systems of others as well. So the bottom line is this: our systems and the systems of others allow us to establish one large module that will enable orphanages and community centers to raise plenty of fish and a lot of healthy vegetables in an economical way.

At the Aquaponics and Earth Sustainable Living cycle of life farm we have a portion of our garden area under shade cloth, including our upside-down growing containers. The summers are very hot in Dallas. The shade helps the plants and enables us to work longer hours in the daytime. We have put up the shade cloth frame in such a way that does not hurt the full-sun loving plants.

From the shade cloth frames we can hang planters, solar lights, and even irrigation piping. The costs for the shade cloths are reasonable, and if you wanted to you could put a fence around the enclosure as added protection against animal predators. The shade cloth frames are not necessary. You can easily build holding frames, and we have some great ideas that we will make available to you in our free e-mail mailings. Be sure to sign up for those under our “contact us” page.
