We were able to both make and buy upside-down growing containers, and we have others in the works. Again, the objective is to fill our growing space for the urban farmer, city dweller, or someone with only a small amount of land available at places like orphanages, learning centers, and backyards.

The Beginning Stages of an Upside-Down System

The Beginning Stages of an Upside-Down System

We have made our own upside-down growing containers and are now trying new store-bought units. I cannot say we have completely mastered the process, but we have raised crops successfully. We will have much more information on this in the future. One thing that we have learned from experience is to make sure you ask your seed store or nursery what tomatoes or peppers grow best in this system. These stores have become very knowledgeable about these kinds of systems due to the recent surge in the “Go Green” movement. We suggest using the short stubby tomatoes like “early girl” and not the larger ones, such as “better boy” and “beefmaster.”

This is also a soilless growing system, so stick with the same ingredients described in the Square Foot Gardening section.
