One of the major goals of our farm in DeSoto, Texas is to put as many grow beds, hanging plants, and vegetation as we can into a tiny tract of land. The Vertigrow system is yet another remarkable grow-system that we are employing at our farm; and since we are a research and development organization, we have even added a few of our own ideas to increase the grow area below the Vertigrow system.
The Vertigrow stacks growing pods one on top of the other about five feet high, so that in a small area you can put in a lot of lettuce, strawberries, and many other plants. The Vertigrow system utilizes hydroponics, which differs from aquaponics. It works on a timer and draws nitrate-rich water from a 55 gallon barrel and cycles as many times as you want it to. This is a soilless system with perilite and vermiculite as a growing medium. In the springtime (in Texas) we have a large harvest of lettuce from this system.
We became concerned because it is not a re-circulating system, so we added cement blocks and landscape timbers all around it. Instead of wasting all the water runoff, we can grow more crops within the enclosure. We can help you with more thorough instructions on this, and more information on the Vertigrow system will be added to our free articles page, just like square foot gardening system.
